Louis GANNE (1862-1923)

Louis GANNE was born in a small town in the Allier departement in the center's France on 5th April 1862.

He spent his youth near Paris. Blessed with a natural talent for music, he entered the Conservatory where he studied harmony and composition with Théodore Dubois. He was awarded a premier prix for harmonie in 1881 and a premier prix for organ in 1882, studying César Franck.

Upon completing his studies, Louis Ganne pursued a dual career as composer and conductor.

A distinguished melody writer, Ganne quickly became known in the theatre for his comic operas which proved to be a lasting success and include "Les Saltimbanques" (1889) and his masterpiece "Hans, le joueur de Flûte" (1906). Two of his military marches, echoes of his natural vitality, "La marche Lorraine" and "Le Père la Victoire" came to be seen as patriotic national songs.

As a conductor, Louis Ganne directed the orchestras of fashionable Parisian theatres "Les Folies-Bergères, Le Casion de Paris, l'Olympia, and Châtelet" as well as the concerts of the Paris Opera Ball. In 1905, Louis Ganne founded the Monte-Carlo Orchestra and settled in Monacon dividing his time between the Principality and Paris.

In 1907, he was appointed President of the Society of Composers, the forerunner of SACEM.

Despite two tumultuous divorces, widely reported in the press, Louis Ganne was decreed Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur on 14th January 1914.

Louis Ganne died at his home in the rue Brochant, Paris, on 13th January 1923.
